What will you ask?

After listening to David Isay, the creator of Story Corps, discuss the top questions people ask of each other... what a great list of questions for those of us who are socially conversationally challenged! It's almost that small talk time of year again. Ugh! It's also, oftentimes, the only time we hang out with certain relatives, why not get the low down on their lives and make good use of the time... just sayin' if my Grandparents were alive that's what I would do. Hindsight 20/20 and all that.

• Where did you grow up?
• What was your childhood like?
• Who were your favorite relatives?
• Do you remember any of the stories they used to tell you?
• How did you and grandma/grandpa meet?
• What was my mom/dad like growing up?
• Do you remember any songs that you used to sing to her/him? Can you sing them now?
• Was she/he well-behaved?
• What is the worst thing she/he ever did?
• What were your parents like?
• What were your grandparents like?
• How would you like to be remembered?
• Are you proud of me?

The last one really gets to me. Before I do another session with a psychic I'll look up better questions. I can also use the questions on the StoryCorps website for upcoming uncomfortable moments with basic strangers at Holiday gatherings.
